Fine Motor Skills: Teaching Boundaries

I continue the quest of perfecting Parker’s fine motor skills.  Strengthening his fingers so that holding a pencil isn’t as hard of a task for him.  Perfecting his grasp so that coloring and painting are more enjoyable.  There’s a long list of activities out there were fine motor skills are a must.  I want Parker to be able to partake of those activities.    We are making progress.   I’m thrilled.  I know one day this kid will write.

As a teacher, I remember being taught that there were these ‘windows’ of opportunity that if a skill is not mastered by, the window closes and you have no choice but to deal with it.  I disagreed then, and I disagree even more now.

Parker is proof that you can master skills way past the supposed windows of opportunity.

We’ve been working on Teaching Boundaries.  Not behavioral boundaries.  But staying within the lines boundaries.  The lines found on the paper we use for handwriting.  The lines that create the boarders that keep our work neat.  Those kinds of lines.

One dimensional, flat lines are limited.  It gives only visual clues for where to place our work.  But I’ve discovered that for Parker, the more senses I add to an experience, the faster he masters it.  And so I added in some dimension in the form of yarn boundaries.

Such a simple thing, this simple bit of string.  But as Parker colors and hits these defining marks, it reinforces what the lines mean and his goal to stay within them.

Because I can’t even draw recognizable stick figures, I chose to use cookie cutter to trace around.  Then I outlined my shapes in glue and laid down the yarn.

No worries!

You could use:

*colored sugar
*use your imagination!

And while you can simply color within these shapes, don’t forget that you can use them to paint within, fill with beads, noodles and other baubles, the sky is certainly the limit in adding the perfect touch to make this activity unique and specific for your student!   Opened ended activities such as this one mean that you can take the invitation and present it in as many ways as you can dream up.  There’s no one way to indulge!
