I watched last night as Reed roto-tilled our backyard vegetable garden. It’s getting to be that time again. I love looking out my windows and seeing dinner growing.
This year I ordered 6 organic heirloom tomato plants for our garden. We usually plant close to 30 tomato plants each year. But with the cost of these heirlooms, six was the limit. The rest will need to come from the local nursery.
There is a secret hidden in heirloom plants. The ability to harvest seed stock from them. So, while they are an investment this year, next year I will have organic heirloom seed of my own to plant in recycled egg cartons and transfer to the outdoors.
I’ve always wanted to learn how to harvest my own seed, and this is the year to do it.
I used to think that I would have made the best of pioneers. Growing my own food, cooking from scratch, all things crunchy. Then I remembered how a certain four (4!) year old is kicking my butt these days and decided that electricity and flushing toilets are indeed very good things.
Take a look at this face:
Does it not yell, “World’s Meanest Mommy?”
This is the look I get when I bring Parker in after being outside.
It doesn’t matter how long we have been outside. Because, according to Parker, life was meant to be lived outside.
My oldest son, Brant, was the same way when he was little. As soon as the sun rose Brant wanted to take off and be outside. Which makes me very grateful that Parker is still too short to reach the doorknobs at our house.
But that won’t last for long.
I’ve got a feeling that I’ll be spending lots of time outside.
What a cutie he is!! Every time I come here I get a huge smile on my face just seeing how well Parker is doing.
BTW, you’ll have to share tips on harvesting tomato seeds. I’m really into planting this year. 10 tomato plants was my $$ limit this year. But each year I hope to get bigger and bigger. So if you find any good sites/books on harvesting seeds I would love to hear about it
You are in my prayers.

I love home grown tomatoes. Parker is looking older in the newer pictures
Parker, You are the cutest little dude. Everytime I see you I smile. Do you like to help in the garden? My mom and me are thinking of planting a garden this year too.

Life is better outside. I have a bumper sticker on my car that says exactly that. It is from Texas Parks & Recreation. Parker and I think a lot alike.
Poor little guy! His face breaks my heart. I dont blame him one bit for not wanting to come inside. Especially after a long winter
Love and hugs,
