We are tying to convince Parker that coloring is a skill that all the boys are mastering these days. We are especially focusing on the proper grip.
Parker isn’t too keen on any of it. I mean, why use crayons when you can make such sweeter messes with paint? And why hold the crayon somebody else’s way when the easier way works just as well.
Oh, and the ‘break the crayons in half to better facilitate the proper grip’ philosophy? Uh.. nope. A broken crayon doesn’t work in Parker’s book. Broken crayons don’t work right. Gee, Mom. Everyone knows that.
I sure have my work cut out for me with this one.
Aw, such a great picture! Coloring is still a favorite of mine! Izabel love, loves to color.
LOL it will come, besides with every great artist they gotta work it out their way mom!
Oh Sistah – I oh so feel your pain – oh sooo very much
We fought the coloring battle first, now we’re working on the grip battle 😉 It’s fun times, yuppers, fun times. But really – can you blame him? Easier is always well…… easier 😉
Tammy, I was gonna suggest the broken crayon thing, but since Parker is way too smart to fall for that trick, have you seen these?

Kaia used these in OT and they are great little crayons for little hands. They are also good for stacking (Parker’s FAVE activity from what I’ve read 😉 ) so it gets double duty. I don’t know anything about this site, but if you would like, email me and I will check the store here locally that sells them.
Micah hates the feel of crayons and refuses to use them. He has a deep-seated love for permanent markers though.
Teaching proper grip has been a struggle for us too. Someone told us to have them hold a bit of crumpled paper with their pinky, ring and middle finger then the pointer and thumb are the only ones left to use… it worked great till the paper got thrown across the room in frustration
But it might be worth a shot…
Parker, what a beautiful picture made!! I love the colors you chose
I wish I had some pointers but I am having the same problem, lol!
I have a hard time teaching my boys how to hold a crayon or pencil too. They like to hold it like Parky does
Love and hugs,
Amy
This photo touches my heart more than you could know.
I have two artistic sons and two who could care less about art.
Good luck with the grip. At age 10, Wil and I still go round and round.
Still loving me some Parker pics.
Hey, Parker, cut mom a little slack. K?
