It has nothing to do with whether you are a Republican or Democrat.
It has EVERYTHING to do with your character.
I’m talking about those who make kids like Parker the butt of their jokes.
Allegheny County’s GOP chair and former county executive Jim Roddey shared a joke at a recent political party.
“There was a disappointment tonight. I was very embarrassed. I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly — he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, ‘Sir, here’s a place.’ And he said, ‘That’s a handicapped space.’ I said, ‘Oh I’m so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded.”
And if THAT wasn’t enough:
The crowd hollered and clapped, and then Roddey went into the the usual thanks at political events for grassroots supporters of the winning candidate.
As long as remarks like Roddey’s are met with laughter, clapping and overall general approval, they will continue.
They will continue to demean and degrade those with intellectual disabilities.
They will continue to encourage a stereotype that so many of us have been working years to end.
They will continue to send a signal that it is perfectly fine to discriminate against my son, Parker.
And your child as well.
Mr. Jim Roddey in all his glory and total lack of character.
It’s time to demand our elected officials to be persons of character, regardless of political party. The Jim. Roddeys and Mark Ewings of the world simply don’t fit the bill.
