Great article Tammy! You are a talented writer and I look forward to what I can learn from that site.

  2. It just makes me sad that a family's careful budgeting and financial planning can be wiped out like this, Tammy. There's no way you two could see this coming. It's just not fair.

To answer your question, I can spend money with the best of them but when times are rough, I can tighten my belt tighter than most, too. Comes from growing up in a big family with very little money at all. My immediate goal is to continue to survive until Rob is fully recovered from his injury and can hopefully get a real job. With benefits. We have no health insurance at all right now and at our ages, it's scary.

Your poor husband. It must get very discouraging.

  3. I still can't believe something like this can happen – that you don't qualify for any help, yet your insurance doesn't cover enough so the hospital bills you. Our health systems needs a major overhaul! I know you meet your goals because you are so determined and have a good set of plans!

  4. What a terrific article. In it, you say so much!

My favorite form of frugality is bartering. I barter editing for piano lessons; my husband trades work fixing fence for horse pasture. We trade labor (yard work) for firewood from a neighbor; we trade meat for organic cherries, apples and pears. The very best thing about it? All these people have become part of our lives, dear friends. Money can't buy that!

    Keep up the good work!

  5. My daughter was on Katie Becket medicaid. This is based on the child's income only. I do not know if you have checked into this yet. I heard of it from another parent NOT from any heath care giver.

    Good luck

it payed for her liver transplant and the meds afterwards. So we did not have to pay over $1000 a month in meds. It also payed for the 6 LPM of oxygen she was on befor the transplant and the 10-15LPM after the transplant. She just got her advanced purple belt in karate. She is no longer on O2 but the meds are life long.
