And People Do This Professionaly?

As I have mentioned before, on August 5th there will be a bake sale and silent auction/raffle for Parker’s medical fund during the Highland Fling.

I keep feeling that since Parker is my son that I should be doing the work on these fundraisers and not having others take time away from their families in order to raise money for Parker. I think it is a left over part of my Super Woman complex I thought had all but bit the dust when I gave birth to a medically fragile, chronically ill baby.

I guess old habits die hard and in this case are dragging me to the boneyard with them.

This silent auction, while a great idea, is absolutely kicking my already tired tush. How hard could it be to print out a bajillion address labels for merchants asking for their help in making this event successful. How hard could it be for me to follow up with in person visits? Why, I even have a couple of friends to help. Although I now know why my one friend was so willing to head up the bake sale rather than the silent auction. She must have done stuff like this before, and knew which line to sign her name under.

This is a very humbling experience, asking for help so that your child can have the medical attention he needs, while still being able to keep a roof over the heads of your other 5 kids. I am insanely jealous of those who have insurance that pays for things like physical therapy, and speech therapy……and more than one set of Tender Grips a month. Reed laughed at me yesterday when I asked the nurse if I could snag Parker a free canula. But, hey, that just saved us $28.00 or the price of two tanks of air or…….well the list goes on.

It also frustrates me , that even with all of Parker’s medical issues, he doesn’t qualify for any kind of SSI or Medicaid. I know of others who have children with Ds that live in other states who receive money for everything from educational toys to computers from their state programs.

Okay, maybe it is trying to figure out how to make this Word application work that is really frustrating me.

But I think most of all I feel guilty. Guilty because when I have chosen to be THIS involved and over my head in a project there is no way I can give the time and attention to Parker that he needs. And that is just not acceptable for a kid that needs his meds to be given on schedule and be fed at least every 3 hours if we want to make sure he gets enough calories a day. Food isn’t all that important to Parker, and he won’t make a fuss to be fed. I have to be on the ball.

Well my back is hurting, I have dinner to make and a huge pile of laundry to take care of.

But I think instead that I will go and do some play therapy with Parker. I made dinner last night.

Can I help from here in any way? Seriously! I'm going to think about how I could…hmmm…..

I feel really guilty, too- guilty that I live in one of those states that gives us PT/ ST/ Medicaid based on diagnoses alone. How I wish I could share it with you, you just don't know.

  6. I can't imagine the stress of trying to pull something like that together with sending out the letters and visiting the stores! Wow that's a full plate you have! I hope it all goes smoothly, you get lots of donations and the silent auction/bake sale is a huge success!!

My daughter's EI just had a silent auction to raise vital funds to continue providing such fabulous services – I really feel for you – I hated going cap in hand to businesses – luckily a couple of our other mum's were scarily good at it! Hope all goes well
